How to Troubleshoot Your Internet Connection

What do you do if, you open the internet browser and get “This site can’t be reached” message or something similar? We will be discussing methods to be able to fix the internet connection on various devices.

Computers can be connected to the internet in two different ways. One way is using the an ethernet cord to physically connect to the modem. Or you can use Wi-Fi, which is a wireless connection to the internet. For each type of connection, the steps will be listed in order. If you do the step and then go back to the page, it may say that there is no connection to the internet, but that is the original message. After each step, you will need to refresh the internet browser by clicking on the refresh button or shutting the program down and reopening it.

Computers

No Ethernet

  1. Unplug the cable, wait one minute, and plug it back in.
  2. Restart the modem. To restart the modem, find the black box with all the blinking lights on it, unplug it, wait one minute, and plug it back in.
  3. Take a break come back in an hour or the next day. Do it all again. If it is still not fixed, then call your tech support or internet provider.

No Wi-Fi

  1. Check to make sure you are connected to the correct Wi-Fi. Go to Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > On. Make sure you are connected to the correct Wi-Fi network and have the correct password.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Restart the internet modem. To restart the modem, find the black box with all the blinking lights on it, unplug it, wait one minute, and plug it back in.
  4. Take a break come back in an hour or the next day. Do it all again. If it is still not fixed call your tech support or internet provider.
  5. Alternative option: use an ethernet cord to connect to the modem.

Smartphones and Tablets

All smartphones and some tablets have two ways to connect to the internet: wi-fi and data. The rest of tablets only have data has an internet connection option.

No Wifi

  1. Check to make sure you are connected to the correct Wi-Fi. Go to Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > On. Make sure you are connected to the correct Wi-Fi network and have the correct password.
  2. Restart your device.
  3. Restart the internet modem and router. To restart the modem, find the black box with all the blinking lights on it, unplug it, wait one minute, and plug it back in.
  4. Turn off Wi-fi and use data, if your device has it. Take a break come back in an hour or the next day. Do it all again. If it is still not fixed call your tech support or internet provider.

No Data

  1. Make sure you have cell service and make sure data is on (Settings > Network > Data).
  2. Use Wifi.
