Happy Wikipedia Day!

On January 15, 2001 Wikipedia was founded.  Here are 5 things you may not know about Wikipedia.

  1. Wikipedia uses open source, Mediawiki software.  Wiki software is a tool that allows collaborative modification of content.  Head on over PBWorks to create your own wiki.
  2. Articles are in 295 languages and there are 5,325,424 English articles, which is about 2,000 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
  3. According to an article in Nature in 2005, the accuracy of Wikipedia is on par with the Encyclopedia Britannica even though Wikipedia does not guarantee any validity.
  4. There are standards of nobility, which means the knowledge must be established and recognized with a neutral point of view.
  5. A non-profit, Wikimedia Foundation owns Wikipedia and also has Wiktionary, Wikivoyage, Wikiversity, Wikinews and Wikibooks.
